Nicolas Winding Refn makes his debut on Netflix with Copenhagen Cowboy

With Copenhagen Cowboy, the director of Drive and The Neon Demon returns to explode our retinas by filming the depths of the Danish capital.

Unveiled in a two-minute trailer published by Netflix, the first images of Copenhagen Cowboy are very interesting. Nicolas Winding Refn embarks us again in his universe with a strong musical and visual identity. Neon lights with electric colors, cold urban shots, dull and aestheticized violence… the artist’s touch is recognizable among thousands. A cryptic style that can repel or subjugate, but that leaves no one indifferent.

Despite the lack of success of his first series Too Old to Die Young on Prime Video, Nicolas Winding Refn is trying his luck again on Netflix. For this new production, the director of The Neon Demon and of Only God Forgives returns to shoot in Denmark for the first time in 15 years. Probably because he put a lot of himself in this work: “With Copenhagen Cowboy, I return to my past to shape my future by creating a series, an expansion of my alter-egos in constant evolution, now in the form of my young heroine, Miu”.

An epic on the edge of the supernatural

In six episodes, Copenhagen Cowboy tells the story of Miu, an enigmatic young heroine. She is about to make a new start after a life of servitude. She embarks on a quest for justice and revenge against Rakel, her sworn enemy. Thus, Miu crosses the Danish capital and the criminal world it contains in an odyssey at the borders of surrealism. The past ends up transforming and defining her future…

This first cryptic trailer is already fascinating. It is in line with the other productions with Nicolas Winding Refn‘s ultra-stylised universe while the enigmatic series is not expected until the end of the year. Described as a neo-noir thriller, the series will also launch the career of Lola Corfixen, the director’s daughter.

Before being released on Netflix, Copenhagen Cowboy will be presented at the Venice Film Festival on Friday, September 09. Meanwhile, Nicolas Winding Refn is already working on several projects. A remake of Maniac Cop, and a series following a French-Italian police brigade in Paris called The Italians are in the works.
