5 movies you should watch this February!
Every month from now on, Sounds Of Series shares with you its selection of movies not to be missed for the month to come. Between the releases in theaters and on the different platforms, it is sometimes complicated to find your way, but don’t panic, we are here to help you!
1. Knock at the cabin
After the excellent The Sixth Sense, the scary Split and the more recent Old, M. Night Shyamalan makes his return to theaters this February 1 with Knock at the Cabin, an adaptation of the 2018 novel The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul G. Tremblay. This one tells the story of two fathers, Andrew and Eric, gone to spend their vacations with their daughter in a remote cabin lost in the forest. As in Funny Games, the family is taken hostage by four strangers. They ask that their victims to make an impossible choice in order to avoid the apocalypse.
The film stands out thanks to its cast, which includes only the top names: Dave Bautista (Blade Runner 2049, Glass Onion), Jonathan Groff (Hamilton, Mindhunter), Rupert Grint (Harry Potter, The Cabinet of Curiosities), Ben Alridge (Fleabag)…
2. The Fabelmans
Another great director returns to share his art on big screen in February. It’s Steven Spielberg (Ready Player One), who was inspired by his youth to create The Fabelmans. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022, where it won the Audience Award, and has since won two more Golden Globe awards.
In this biopic movie, Sammy Fabelman discovers a shocking family secret. In a post-World War II context, the teenager falls in love with cinema, which will help him to accept the truth. Sammy is played by Gabriel Labelle (American Gigolo), who stars alongside Michelle Williams (The Greatest Showman) and Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine, The Batman). The Fabelmans will be released in France on February 22.
3. Aftersun
This Wednesday, February 1st, in addition to Knock at the cabin, the much anticipated Aftersun was released. Directed by Charlotte Wells, the film goes into the head of Sophie, who remembers the summer vacations she spent with her father in Turkey, twenty years ago. She remembers the moments of joy, their complicity, sometimes their disagreement, and tries to reconcile the image she had of him with the one he really was. She then tries to find answers among these memories to the question that has obsessed her for so many years : who was really this man she feels she did not know?
If the script leaves few clues for the viewer to know what to expect, what will perhaps motivate you is the presence of Paul Mescal in the cast. The actor who starred alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones in Normal People has been nominated for a 2023 Academy Award in the Best Actor category for his performance in Aftersun.
4. Sharper
Available on Apple TV+ on February 17, Sharper reveals a secret New York City, moving from luxurious apartments to the darkest corners of the Queens. In this dark thriller, a devious con man takes on Manhattan’s famous billionaires as they vie for wealth and power. A risky game of ambition, greed, lust, jealousy and thwarted hopes is set up…
Directed by Benjamin Caron, this film features well-known actors such as Julianne Moore (The Big Lebowski, The Lost World: Jurassic Park), Sebastian Stan (Fresh, Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Justice Smith (The Get Down) and John Lithgow (Dexter). As for one of the lead actresses, Briana Middleton, Sharper is her first big budget film.
5. Ant-Man and the Wasp : Quantumania
Then, on February 15, the latest Marvel movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, will be released. Directed by Peyton Reed, already in charge of the previous movies, this one will once again follow the adventures of Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne, a.k.a. Ant-Man and the Wasp, along with Hope’s parents, who accidentally go exploring the subatomic dimension. They will have to interact with strange creatures and embark on an odyssey that will push them beyond the limits of what they thought was possible.
This third movie with the superhero played by Paul Rudd will also see the come back of Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors (Creed 3), a character highly awaited by fans!
